Highlands Hammock State Park preserves an island of Florida's original landscape on the western slope of the Lake Wales Ridge.

The original park, sheltered from development by local citizens, now stands amidst residential developments, farms and pastures. Recent efforts have added acerage through the The Nature Conservancy (TNC) assistance and funds from the Conservation and Recreation lands (CARL) Trust Fund.

Today the park map appears as an unfinished jig saw puzzle.
